And what motivated you to do that?

We all know The Sketchpad. We're looking at it right now. But just what is it, why is it here, and for what reason do I have that underwear on my head? The answers to those burning questions and more lie within.

What's it all about?

The Sketchpad exists to spread the joy of Paint.NET to the Inter.NET. This is my little place to host tutorials that help new users unlock the power Paint.NET packs under its rather sexy hood. Here, you'll find a nice little list of tutorials, downloadables, and other such resources that the members of the PDN community have made available to other users of PDN.

What is this Paint.NET?

Paint.NET is an image editor, similar to PhotoShop, The GIMP, and the like, but which is designed to be simple, straightforward, and easy to jump in to without feeling too overwhelmed. It's not intended to be a feature-parity freeware replacement to professional graphics editors like PhotoShop, but it does have many of the fundementals (Layers, Gradients, Clone Stamp, et cetera), making it an excellent solution for people who need only do simple manipulation, such as cropping, rotating, and color-correcting, as well as being a great starting point for people new to digital image manipulation.

Still, despite its goals of simplicity, Paint.NET packs some significant power. After all, every graphic for this site was made using Paint.NET. The big difference between PDN and the professional graphics apps is in the way the features are presented to the user. Instead of mucking though menu flyouts 3 options deep, Paint.NET strives to aid the user at every turn. It mayn't yet have all the power, nor may it ever, but it's a great little tool to have at your side.
